VIOLENCE DOESN'T SELL

An article on CBS Health Watch by Erin R. King entitled "Study: TV Violence Impairs Memory" sites a new study out of Iowa State that looked at the effects of memory and violent content on TV.

Researchers found that people of ALL age groups and sexes do not retain information in commercials when the shows preceding have violent content.

"The effects of violent images are both immediate and lasting, Brad Bushman Ph.D. says--24 hours later, people still didn't remember the commercials. 'I think the results are very important. I think they're solid evidence to suggest that viewing violence has a very harmful effect on society,' he says."

Bushman went on further to comment that violent TV content would end if advertisers knew violence does not sell.

Dr. Jane's Comment

If you have read my effects of violence on children issue or spent any time reading Dr. Bruce Perry's articles, your answer to this new study is "no dah." If you have not read this newsletter before go to this web address (http://www.children.bigstep.com/category.html?UCIDs=543830%7C620736) and read it pronto. You'll be doing yourself and your family a blessing.

Dr. Perry and other researchers have shown that violent media and violent events have measurable effects on children's brains, namely the memory center. This was first event in the brains of war veterans. Their hippocampus, the brain's memory center, shrank in response to war.

So now here is another REALLY good reason to shut off the boob tube and "just say no" to your kid's pleas for the latest and greatest violent movie, song, or game. Explain to them why. "Honey this is bad for your brain, not to mention I said NO." Then offer an alternative, so they don't feel like they lead a deprived life.

You need to stand your ground on this topic of violence. I can not express enough to you parents. Just look around your child's preschool or school. Violence is a poison that is killing our families and our kids.

Next site this article and write your local and national TV administrative offices and advertisers. Unfortunately, it will take money to get their attention, but when they see that violence does not sell, they will change their ways. Tell the folks at the Coalition for Quality Children's Media www.cqcm.org you are done with violent media.

But don't wait for them. Take your stand with your family today.
